Which AWS Standard Covers E6013 and E6010 Stick Electrodes?
Both E6013 and E6010 fall under AWS A5.1/A5.1M, the specification for carbon steel electrodes used in shielded metal arc welding.
This answer matters when a purchasing request simply says “AWS welding rods.” A bidder needs the correct specification, classification, and edition before comparing offers.
The standard sets classification requirements for covered electrodes. It does not, by itself, approve a welding procedure or prove a delivered lot passed every project test.
What Does AWS A5.1/A5.1M Cover?
The American Welding Society publishes AWS A5.1/A5.1M for carbon steel covered electrodes used in shielded metal arc welding, or SMAW.
SMAW is often called stick welding. The electrode has a metal core and a covering that supports the welding arc and shields the molten weld.
E6013 and E6010 are classifications within this covered-electrode category. The number after AWS A5.1 names the specification; the E-number names an electrode classification.
The 2025 edition is titled “Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes for Shielded Metal Arc Welding.” A buyer should still check which edition the contract invokes.
Its scope includes classification tests and requirements for weld metal properties, soundness, and electrode usability. It also addresses identification, dimensions, manufacturing, and packaging.
The standard includes moisture requirements for low-hydrogen electrode coverings. That does not mean E6013 or E6010 automatically becomes a low-hydrogen product.
Optional supplemental requirements exist, but a buyer must identify any needed designators and evidence. Do not assume a basic E6013 label includes them.
The A5.1 side uses U.S. customary units. The A5.1M side uses SI units; AWS states these systems should be applied independently.
In everyday trade, people may shorten the reference to “AWS A5.1.” For a formal tender, reproduce the standard and edition exactly as specified.
A supplier may also display ASME SFA-5.1 or an ISO classification. Those markings deserve separate checking against the actual tender language.
Do not infer that every ISO code has a simple one-to-one match. Ask the buyer which classification and documentation they will accept.

Where Do E6013 and E6010 Differ Within the Standard?
Both are carbon steel stick electrode classifications, and both contain “60.” That indicates a 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength class for deposited weld metal.
Both also contain “1,” identifying an all-position classification. This is a classification feature, not permission to ignore the applicable welding procedure.
Their last digits differ. E6010 is associated with a high-cellulose sodium covering and DC electrode-positive operation.
E6013 is associated with a high-titania potassium, commonly described as rutile-type, covering. Product data should confirm the available current and polarity options.
The difference affects practical selection. E6010 is commonly used where a penetrating arc helps with certain pipe root passes.
E6013 is generally selected for a softer arc and general fabrication on suitably prepared steel. A smoother bead does not make it interchangeable with E6010.
A purchase order asking for E6010 should not be filled with E6013 because both carry the E60 strength class. The electrode’s usability matters.
Check the machine as well. A buyer with only AC equipment should not assume an E6010 order will work merely because E6013 may run on AC.
The standard groups products by classification, but manufacturers still publish individual operating ranges and size choices. Ask for the actual product data sheet.

Does an AWS Classification Prove Tender Compliance?
No single classification label proves that an entire tender has been met. A tender may separately name electrode size, approved manufacturer, packing, and certificates.
It may also require a particular welding procedure, inspection plan, impact performance, or lot traceability. Review each requirement before quoting.
First, find the exact wording. Does the bid specify AWS A5.1, AWS A5.1/A5.1M:2025, or an older edition?
Do not silently substitute a newer edition where the contract names an older one. Ask the project contact how deviations should be handled.
Second, write the complete classification on the quotation line. “Mild steel welding rod” does not distinguish E6013 from E6010.
Third, add diameter, length, net weight per pack, carton arrangement, and quantity. Those are commercial details buyers must verify independently.
Fourth, identify the requested evidence. A product brochure, manufacturer’s declaration, and lot-specific test record are different documents.
Agree on the required document before bidding. A promise to “provide certificate” can lead to disputes when the buyer expects specific test results.
Fifth, check whether the purchaser needs approval of a sample or prequalified source. Classification alone does not grant vendor approval.
For repeated deliveries, specify lot marking on inner packs and outer cartons. This helps a distributor connect a complaint or test result to stock.
If equivalence is allowed, submit technical data and obtain written approval. An informal statement of equal performance is not an acceptance record.

How Should a Buyer Request a Reliable Quote?
Send the specified AWS classification and edition first. Then describe the base steel, joint, welding position, power source, and expected application.
Include rod diameter and length, estimated volume, destination, packaging needs, and required documents. This lets suppliers quote comparable offers.
For E6010, confirm DC electrode-positive capability and the applicable pipe procedure. For E6013, check the intended AC or DC setup against the offered product.
Ask the supplier for a current product data sheet, sample availability, and a clear statement of which documents accompany shipment.
If the end user has a welding procedure specification, follow it. This classification standard does not replace procedure qualification or project acceptance rules.
Request a trial with the actual equipment and joint before a substantial commitment. Record the electrode size, polarity, and test conditions.
When reviewing bids, compare what each offer actually includes. A cheaper box may carry different packing weight or incomplete paperwork.
The useful answer is straightforward: AWS A5.1/A5.1M covers E6013 and E6010 stick electrodes, while the tender defines the exact purchase obligation.
Send us the classification, contract edition, quantities, and document checklist. We can prepare a specification-based electrode quotation for your review.
